In differential geometry, a roulette is a type of curve that encompasses and extends concepts like cycloids, epicycloids, hypocycloids, trochoids, epitrochoids, hypotrochoids, and involutes.
Fundamentally, it describes the trajectory formed by a curve as it rolls along another curve without slipping.
In other words, it’s math 🙂
Your year design is generated just like your month and day designs, but with the potential for up to 2,099 rotations (our maximum year), it’s more numerically intricate. This added complexity naturally produces moiré patterns—unique optical illusions specific to your year.
Moiré patterns occur when two or more similar patterns are layered with a slight shift, rotation, or scale difference. This interaction creates larger, often wave-like shapes that emerge from the finer details of the overlaid patterns.

The legend is a valuable complement to your artwork, showcasing each individual element you designed to form your complete RAD piece. It presents the Month, Day, and Year designs separately, each with a title, so viewers can easily understand what they’re seeing and how the final work came together.
Leaving the legend out, however, can be a way to keep the creation process a mystery to everyone else.

Printing from screen to paper is always a bit tricky, however, we work closely with our print partners, using the same machines, paper, and processes to keep colors consistent.
Still, printing is a chemical process, so slight differences can happen due to factors like machine type, settings, paper, humidity, and cleaning schedules. These small variations are normal and within industry standards.
